NEW YORK (NY) – On Saturday, May 31, Jivamukti Yoga School will open its doors for the 2nd Annual “Save the Hippie Chimps” Concert to benefit the endangered bonobos. Reality Sandwich, the popular and progressive web magazine will also co-host the event this year. Besides great music, dancing, food and an opportunity to learn more about the Bonobo Conservation Initiative’s (BCI) courageous efforts to save bonobos, this year’s event features legendary musician Tony Levin - who besides playing for artists such as Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, John Lennon, Herbie Mann, and Pink Floyd - has also played music with these intelligent and peaceful great apes!

The “hippie chimps” in question are bonobos – humankind’s closest relatives – whose very survival is in dire peril. Bonobos are highly intelligent, peaceful and loving beings that exist in a matriarchal society and truly exemplify the credo: "Make love, not war!" BCI, led by Sally Jewell Coxe, has worked tirelessly to protect these gentle great apes and the Congo Basin rainforest, which is their habitat.
“BCI is making the most important and successful effort to save the bonobos and their habitat,” said Jivamukti Yoga co-founder Sharon Gannon. “We are proud to lend a hand in supporting its endeavors to expand its recent successes in establishing the Bonobo Peace Forest in the Democratic Republic of Congo.”

The evening of music and dancing – with all proceeds going to benefit BCI – is headlined by Wynne Paris and Groovananda with special guests, including Tony Levin (who will also share his experience of playing music with bonobos), Anthony Krizan (The Spin Doctors) and Perry Robinson, and featuring performances by Reality Sandwich contributor Debra DeSalvo and Devi, and Tina “Tabla Girl” Sugandh.

BCI president Sally Jewell Coxe – who Yoga + Joyful Living Magazine called “the woman whose passion to save the habitat of the imperiled bonobo is also protecting the very air we breathe” – will be on hand for a special presentation. BCI executive director, Michael Hurley will present about a “Journey to the Sacred Forest” and how indigenous knowledge and spiritual beliefs play an important role in protecting the rainforest.

Guests will also be invited to the “Reality Sandwich Room” featuring presentations and music during breaks away from the main stage. Providing food and refreshments again this year will be the aptly named Bonobo’s Vegetarian Restaurant, one of New York City’s leading destinations for conscious eating.

A night of great music, dining and dancing awaits as you help to save our closest relatives and their home in the heart of the world’s second largest rainforest!
